Eye Exams from Our Optometrist in Raleigh
Our eyes and brain do such a remarkable job of translating the world into images for us that we sometimes take the gift of clear vision for granted. But the eyes are also vulnerable to injury, diseases or subtle changes that can cause lasting damage. That’s why an annual or bi-annual eye exam is so important to ensure many more years of optimal vision — and our optometrist in Raleigh, Dr. Handschumacher, is happy to provide this necessary wellness procedure here at Family Eye Care Center.
Eye and vision exams help us understand, not only what’s going inside the eye itself, but also the underlying causes of those problems. Our eye doctor will consider your personal/family medical history, paying special attention to conditions such as hypertension or diabetes that can have an impact on your eyes’ health. If you’ve been experiencing any symptoms such as vision problems, redness or dryness, we will take those symptoms into consideration as well. Our eye doctor will then run your eyes through some simple, painless tests, using our specialized, state-of-the-art equipment, to evaluate convergence, focusing ability, eye teaming and other functions. These tests give us an early indication of possible eye diseases that may be affecting your vision, as well as any congenital abnormalities that require treatment.
For a detailed examination of the inner parts of the eye, we may need to perform an internal eye examination via pupil dilation. The dilated pupil gives us a larger “window” to look through, enabling us to see much of the retina and optic nerve. Another eye test called slit lamp test lets us view the front part of the eye, including the lens and cornea, in microscopic detail. These tools and techniques can help us identify such sight-robbing diseases as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. The sooner we identify these disorders, the sooner we can administer the appropriate treatments to preserve your vision.
Visual acuity testing is another important aspect of a regular eye exam, starting in early childhood as soon as our young patients can provide feedback on what they’re seeing. Our standard technique is to use an eye chart that presents rows of text at different sizes to simulate your Ability to see clearly at specific distances. as you view these lines. as you view these lines through a device called a phoropter, we can adjust the phoropter’s lenses until you’re seeing as clearly as possible at all distances. This gives us your prescription for corrective lenses, if needed, to compensate for refractive disorders such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia. If you want contact lenses, we will perform some additional contact lens testing to ensure a perfect fit.
